Claude account switchers, compared.

Search for a Claude account switcher and you'll find tools that sound alike but switch different things. Here's which is which.

Short answer: Claude lives in three places: claude.ai in the browser, the Claude Desktop app, and Claude Code. Browser extensions and profiles switch only the website; command-line scripts switch only Claude Code; separate computer users switch everything, but one desktop at a time. Claude Sessions Pro is built for the desktop app: every account its own app or window, all open at once, with Claude Code on the same account.

Free 1-hour preview. For macOS 14 or later, or 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, with Claude Desktop installed.

Four kinds of switcher

  • Command-line switchers. Scripts, mostly on GitHub, that swap Claude Code's login or folder. You can do the same with no tool: CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, one folder per account, as Anthropic's docs describe.
  • Browser extensions and profiles. These switch claude.ai. A separate browser profile per account works as well, with no extension. The desktop app isn't affected.
  • Separate computer users. A second macOS or Windows user switches everything, desktop included. Right for two people; slow for one.
  • An app per account. This switches the desktop app itself, and keeps each account open in its own app or window, so there's nothing to switch.

Before you install one

  • Terminal only? An environment variable is all you need. Setup.
  • Website only? A browser profile per account is free.
  • Desktop app? Each account needs its own copy of the app with its own data folder, by hand or with an app.

A switcher you'll rarely need.

Claude Sessions Pro has a switcher in the menu bar on a Mac and the tray on Windows, but you'll hardly use it: each account is its own app with its own Dock icon (on Windows, its own window titled with its name), and they all run at once. Each keeps its own login, chats, Code tab sessions, settings and connectors, and opens Claude Code on the same account.

FAQ

Is there a Claude account switcher?

There are several kinds: browser extensions or profiles for claude.ai, command-line scripts for Claude Code, separate computer users, and apps like Claude Sessions Pro that give each account its own Claude app. Each switches a different part of Claude.

How do I switch Claude accounts in the desktop app?

In one copy of Claude Desktop you sign out and sign in again. To keep accounts open together, each needs its own copy of the app with its own data folder.

Is it allowed to use multiple Claude accounts?

Claude Sessions Pro runs the official Claude app, signed into accounts you own, such as your work and personal Claude accounts. It doesn't change how Claude works. Anthropic's terms still apply to each account; using several accounts to get around usage limits may break them, so use it for accounts you're allowed to have.

Which Claude account switcher should I use?

It depends where you use Claude. For the website, a browser profile per account. For Claude Code alone, CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR. For the Claude Desktop app, Claude Sessions Pro: it keeps every account's app open at once, with its Code tab, connectors and Claude Code.

Claude Sessions Pro is made by LEX GLOBAL IT S.R.L. and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Anthropic. It runs the official Claude app with accounts you already have, and Anthropic's terms apply to each account. Claude is a trademark of Anthropic, PBC.
